The Apollo Missons
The Apollo missions etched humanity's first steps on lunar soil, a feat of audacious engineering and resolve from 1969 to 1972. Apollo 8, in particular, stands as the bold precursor—four astronauts orbiting the Moon for the first time, reading Genesis from its edge. Those flights were triumphs of speed and singular focus. Artemis builds on that foundation, but with eyes on endurance. It aims for sustainable presence at the lunar south pole, diverse crews, and a bridge to Mars.
The Artemis Program
Artemis marks NASA's return to crewed lunar exploration after more than five decades. Artemis I, uncrewed in 2022, validated the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and Orion spacecraft. Subsequent missions will land humans—first a woman and person of color—establish gateways, and test technologies for deep space.
Artemis differs from Apollo in scale and intent:
- Orion offers 30% more habitable volume, with modern life support.
- SLS dwarfs the Saturn V in power for heavier payloads.
- International partners, like Canada, join the effort.
Artemis II: The First Crewed Step
Artemis II launched on April 1, 2026, from Kennedy Space Center, carrying four astronauts on a 10-day lunar flyby. This mission tests Orion with humans aboard, verifying systems from launch to Earth return.

Key Goals:
- Validate crew operations in deep space.

As of now, the crew has completed perigee raise burn, troubleshot minor issues, and departed Earth orbit. Lunar closest approach comes April 6, followed by return trajectory.
